Probe claims over scholarship manipulation, Govt urged

PETALING JAYA: A public inquiry headed by the Chief Secretary to the Government should be formed to look into allegations that government officials are distorting the distribution of scholarship awards to students.

“If there is evidence of skewed implementation of the Government's sound policy to grant awards based on merit, then the officials should be severely disciplined for flouting government directives,” Asli Centre for Public Policy Studies chairman Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said in a statement yesterday.

He was commenting on Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who said that government officers who failed to follow Cabinet directives was one of the main reasons why top students failed to get scholarships.

Dr Wee said many students who deserved the scholarships did not get the grants, but those who did not deserve them had successfully obtained financial assistance.

Navaratnam said the alleged manipulations were based on race.

He said if found to be true, this would destroy the Government's transformation programmes and undermine the whole concept of 1Malaysia and national unity.
